my ancestors constituencies
« on: Sunday 07 July 24 13:57 BST (UK) »
Before I began, this post is intended to be apolitical, I'm an Aussie, so have no dog in this fight.

In light of the recent election, I thought it an interesting exercise to see what constituencies my ancestors came from when they migrated in the mid-19th century. I identified 18 in all, mostly in the southwest of England.

before this election, 14 were Conservative, 2 Labour, 1 Lib-Dem, 1 SNP

after this election, 8 are Labour, 5 Conservative, and 5 Lib-Dem

with 10 out of 18 constituencies changing hands, that's quite the change!
NSW Convict 1836: Peter WIFFIN (alias VIVIAN)
VDL Convict 1841: Richard REES
SA Pioneers (<1847): Hornsby, Wallis, Willoughby, Floate, Mills, Chesson, Degenhardt.
SA Old Colonists (<1857): Messenger, Tyler, McFeat, Ladner, Edwards, Cassidy, Rhodes, Shaw, Waye, Sibly.
SA Colonists (<1901): Jones, Pike, Bowyer, Davey.

I'm always interested to know the political orientation of ancestors.  Some of them made it perfectly clear.

"Dear Editor:  In Saturday's Constitution-Tribune my name was on the list of Democratic judges for the August 7 primary. I am not and never have been a Democrat, Please make correction. Waldo W. Chapman."

And of course back in Victorian days and earlier Poll Books were published showing how each person voted. No secret ballots back then.

Indeed! Only a very few of my ancestors had the vote.

I have the full range - a lot of Republicans (back in the day when it was respectable), a good many Democrats, a handful of Socialists and two or three Communists.
