James Kerr & Sarah look to be in Terregles in Kirkcudbrightshire in the 1851 census. Both aged 39. Son James was one of their 8 children. GROS ref 880/1/5. You can view the full details on Scotlandspeople for a modest fee.

I see a likely death for Sarah Kerr nee Pattie in Terregles in 1877 aged 65. Looks as though the parents remained in the same area.

You will find him in England in 1881/91/1901/1911 census. 1911 aged 65 coal merchant, with same place of birth as 1871 census. Wife and 2 children with him in 1911

Not fully convinced the 1871 James you have is the son of James & Sarah

The James Kerr who died in 1931 Carlisle had the full name of

KERR, JAMES  HEARD     aged 85
GRO Reference: 1931  D Quarter in CARLISLE  Volume 10B  Page 639.

He married Margaret Blackwood jq 1873 in Carlisle. Only way to establish if this is "your" James is to purchase marriage certificate to establish fathers name.

Can confirm the James Kerr you have in 1871 living in Annan born (Caerlaverock, Dumfries) and later in all other census is James Heard Kerr born to Parents Thomas & Elizabeth nee' Heard who married 4.2.1842 in Brydekirk

Need to find your James Kerr son of James & Sarah elsewhere in 1871.
