Robert Anderson Turnbull or Elliot
« on: Monday 01 July 24 23:41 BST (UK) »
Any help finding birth of gg grandfather Robert Anderson Turnbull born around 1839 Castleton Roxburghshire. On his marriage certificate to Margaret Gunn Polson it shows his mother as Elizabeth Elliot no father named. It shows his name as Robert Anderson Elliot or Turnbull. Any ideas why it would state both names? His mother Elizabeth subsequently married Robert Young  1852 in Oxnam
Crampton and Gelder of Linconshire and Yorkshire.

His father was most likely TURNBULL.  I can't see a baptism in Castleton, so he may not have been baptised.

Robert was using the Turnbull surname from a child

Elizabeth (Betty) ELLIOT was born 1821 Castleton to parents
Gideon ELLIOTT and Agnes ANDERSON

Children for Gideon and Agnes
•   Jean 1819
•   Betty 1821
•   Margaret 1824
•   Helen 1827
•   Mary 1830
•   Agnes 1832
•   Anne 1835
•   Janet 1840

When Elizabeth ELLIOT / YOUNG died in 1904 her mother is recorded as ANDERSON on the index.

By the 1841 census, Elizabeth is away from home working, but her illegitimate son Robert Turnbull is living with his grandparents.

By 1851 census Robert Turnbull is living with Elizabeth’s sisters
1851 census Dykecrofts Castleton Ref 784/ 4/ 6

ELLIOT   Helen   Dau   U   F   22   Farm Servant   Roxburghshire   Castleton
ELLIOT   Mary   Dau   U   F   20   Farm Servant   Roxburghshire   Castleton
ELLIOT   Janet   Dau   U   F   12   Farm Servant   Roxburghshire   Castleton
TURNBULL   Robert   Grnson   -   M   12      Roxburghshire   Castleton
ANDERSON   Agness   Grndau   -   F   1      Roxburghshire   Castleton

Relationship for Robert to head of house is wrong. He was the nephew of Helen Elliot (and Mary and Janet)

To answer your question “It shows his name as Robert Anderson Elliot or Turnbull. Any ideas why it would state both names?”
His mother’s name was Elliot and his father’s name was Turnbull. The name Armstrong comes from his grandmother.
It is likely that Robert was named after his father.
Have a look in the Kirk sessions to see if there is a mention.

Possible father Robert Turnbull in the 1841 census

He married Mary Brown in Sept 1841

Any ideas why it would state both names?
Because his parents were not married to one another.

Your best chance of finding any record of his birth or baptism is the Kirk Session records, to which Neale1961 has posted a link above.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
