Marriage Help
« on: Tuesday 25 June 24 14:57 BST (UK) »
Afternoon all. I'm hoping someone is able help me find a marriage between Edward McCulloch and Elizabeth McKeown, possibly in Belfast before 1864. I know they had 2 children, John McCulloch b 1864 and Elizabeth McCulloch b 1865, both born in Belfast, but I can't find a marriage for them. I have both birth certs for the kids but cant find the parents marriage anywhere.
Mills, Dallas, Stewart, McCulloch,

Daughter Eliza born 26 Nov. and baptised 28 Nov.1865 at St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Belfast-

Son John baptised same church 19 Jan.1864-

Civil registration of Catholic marriages started in 1864. You'll need to look for marriage in church records- start with St. Patrick's and if nothing found then keep expanding into different parishes-

Protestant as far as I know
... and yet two children baptised in Catholic church  :-\ You need to check R.C. Parish registers (be aware that Edward and Edmund are interchangeable and that both McCulloch and McKeown have numerous variations)

This is my gt gt gt grandfathers first marriage, moved to Glasgow for his second and it's all protestant after that. Maybe she was Catholic and he wasn't too fussed how he got married.

Still not finding their marriage at the moment but found the kids baptisms. Not being up to speed all all thing Catholic, what are sponsors and celebrants? Are they like witnesses?

The celebrant would be the priest (or in some cases a Bishop) and sponsors are godparents who promise to help make sure child receives a religious education- often relatives or close friends of the parents who will look after the child in case something happens to one or both parents.

I can see a marriage on 5 April 1863 in St. Malachy's RC Church in Belfast between Edward McCoullogh and Elisabeth McKeown, they were married by P. Clarke and the only other information offered up is that Hugh McKeown? and Catherine Connelan? were the witnesses.
