Fowler's Paisley & Commercial Directory and General Advertiser 1853-1854
QUARRELTON
Linwood Victualling Society, John Galbraith, salesman

Any connection?

Update - the 1845-46 Directory has "John Galbreath" not "Galbraith" and need to recheck '53-54 (but problems repeating search).
Update - '53-'54 reads "Galbraith".

I think there's a reasonable fair chance.  I'll look into it - Thanks.

Can be found at FindMyPast or British Newspaper Archive - both subscription sites.

I found a 3rd instance of his providing the prize in the butter competition. Wondered if there was an ulterior motive? That is, he got the butter after the show.

I think it is Society House, referring to the local Cooperative Society.

In the 1855 Valuation Rolls for Linwood there is an entry for John Galbreath, Store Keeper, tenant and occupier of a property owned by the Linwood Spinning Company (as are all 33 of the sites listed on this page). The preceding three listed properties have "Cooperative Society" as the tenant and occupier, and the first of these has an annotation in the 'Observations' column "per John Galbreath, Store Keeper".

Co operative society ( local Co -Op )  was my first guess but I didn't have any evidence to support it.  I think your puzzle may be solved . Regards Orkrad
