Background: My relative is Martha Hartley Jackson. She married William Cunningham in 1851, had five children to him and then he died in 1862. She then had two children to an Anthony Garvey (1869 and 1873) and in the 1871 and subsequent censuses she was shown as his wife and living in Bridlington (1871) and York (1881 and 1891).
My problem: I cannot find any record of the marriage between Anthony and Martha. Can anyone help? Could it be that they merely claimed to be married? Or was that never done in the 1800s?

In advance, thank you for any help that anyone can give! :)

Oh goodness, yes they could claim to be married and yes, it did happen - a lot!  I have at least three instances in my own family in the 19th century.

Thank you so much Mabel and Comberton. It is rather embarrassing that you are able to find these things so quickly. I wish I were better with my searches. I use Ancestry and sometimes the results of the searches seem quite scattergun. Comberton, I see you use Find My Past. Do you think it gives more accurate results and has more documents? Also, I can't see the images when I follow your link. I see the narratives though.

Thanks again!

I do like searching on FindMyPast but both sites have different records sets so search with both. I renewed with FindMyPast yesterday after a while away so not sure if these will both be available without a subscription but I have accessed Yorkshire marriages before with just a free account. Give it a try, nothing to lose. I found the marriage register image too.
