I cant find a death for Thomas after 1828 (when he needed to be alive for his last child to be born) and 1834 in Scotland.

However there is a record for Thomas Moffat in the Chelsea Hospital, register of pensioners on 14th October 1835. He was aged 39, born 1796 in Berwick (maybe North Berwick, East Lothian). He served 1 year underage then 2 years as Quarter Master Sergeant in the royal horse artillery. When examined he had an injury to his right shoulder and Chronic Rheumatism. To view the registration document Ancestry is sending me to Fold 3 which I don't have access to.
It's also on FindMyPast.

If he was 39 in 1835, and his age is accurate, he would have been born 1795/1796, so in 1808 he was only 12 or 13, and he could not legally marry until he was 14. Even so, it was unusual for a man to marry before his mid-20s because he has to become established in life and able to aupport a wife and family before he could contemplate marriage.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Yes, Thomas is a real mystery, as you say the one aged 39 cant be the one I'm looking for, though neither can Captain Thomas William Moffat who died 20 November 1835, his pension record lists his widow as Martha Matilda Moffat

I will have to wait until the end of the month to buy more credits on Scotland's people and hope one of his children's baptisms, census for Helen in 1841/1851 or their marriage record gives a new clue
