Edinburgh Poor Law
« on: Thursday 13 June 24 01:07 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Does anyone know if Edinburgh still has a collection of poor law records?

I have been using the Glasgow records at the Mitchell Library which have been very useful and I have some relatives in Edinburgh that likely would have an application somewhere.

My 3rd great-grandmother, Mary Goldie, had 7 illegitimate children while living at 8 Queens Place, Greenside. I believe the father of the first few children may be a man called James Kelly who was Mary Goldie's nephew. I'm looking for any record that may suggest who any of the children's fathers may be.
Harrison/Sinclair - Kilsyth
Goldie - Edinburgh
MacDonald - Kirkintilloch
McGlinn/Paton/Gall/Hutton/Webster - Dundee

Edinburgh City Archives hold quite a few records regarding the Poor Law Administration but I'm not sure if they have the Inspectors Reports

As I understand it the records of individual paupers in Edinburgh have not survived, so you won't get as detailed information about specific people as you get in Glasgow. There may be mentions of individuals in the records, but the records of applications and the registers of poor have not survived.

Best way to find out what they have is to ask Edinburgh City Archives the specific question and see what they say.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
