NZ adoption approx 1871

Hi, I'm not sure if this query should be here or in the DNA section.

Someone has contacted me through Ancestry DNA because they match (not very strongly) with myself and ten others that are in my family tree.

Her great-grandfather was adopted in South Otago around 1871. Is there any way to find out who his birth parents might be? She can't find a birth record on dia for his adopted name.

Hoping someone might be able to help, as I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks

Just incase… Have they tried searching NZ BDMs just by his forenames?  (Put a full-stop up in the surname field)
Hoping his names are more distinctive than John, William etc!

Thank you so much.I didn't know that was possible. I have one possibility with NR by the father's name, and several hundred others. I'll start with the NR to check the location

Yes there is.  I am not completely conversant with it.  But if genealogy group has the microfiche, there are index books to use to get the location.  I am not sure if the books work with the online numbers.  Hopefully someone like Lucy2 will be on later and can tell you for sure.

It is only the (birth or death) microfiche that are referenced in the Index books that a library or research centre may have to give you a location of the event.

What is the source of this information?

If the enquirer has no birth record, what is the earliest evidence that the great-grandfather existed?   

Is it his name on a marriage  certificate?.  If so, start with that document....everything word on the document?

I have confirmed this is the case.
I think most Nz genealogy branches have the fiche & index books.
If you are not a member, see the Nz Soc of genealogists website to find your nearest branch. Many have open research days , they would encourage you to join, it isn’t compulsory, but a good move nevertheless
