How do I know that Maria Gordon Rutherford is the same person.

And her name is Maria Kelly in the 1881 census.
Children's mmn Kelly.

It is not the same person. Did you read reply #6 ?

It is difficult to find Mary Kelly prior to 1871 as her age differs on the censuses.

In 1871 3745/126/42
Mary is 28 yrs born abt 1843
They are transcribed as Wetherington on Ancestry and shown as married.

Sara,
Find My Past has free access to newspapers this weekend. If you search for John Hetherington in 1880s (there may be other articles in other decades) there are several mentions for John snr and the children ranging from failing to send his children to school to more serious crimes.
