DNA connection to Grandfather

Back in the 1980s my boss at work used to reminisce about being stationed at Catterick for his National Service. As a military base, it could have housed people from all over the country.

Anything likely on the 1939 register? What names witnessed the marriage?

Herbert Jackson married Mary Jane Bulmer 1918, Newton on Ouse.

I think the above had children Edith Mary b 1918, Thomas W b 1927 & Norman Jackson b 1934.

I cannot find any of them on the 1939 census.

I believe Edith Mary Jackson married Frank Hawksby 1940. The surname Hawksby is also a DNA match. I did contact this match but he grew up in a childrens home & never knew his biological parents and what became of them.

Does your friend not know where her grandfather was born/lived before the army?

No, sorry she doesn't. The last I can trace him is on his wife's death cert 1962, Margaret Jackson aged 39.
His occupation is still a Sergeant. Home address: 6 Pear Tree Croft, Longton, Lancashire.
He had 3 sons under the age of 6 that went onto be raised by their uncle on their Mothers side. The boys lost touch with their Father.

If you have a findmypast sub, you can see H, Mary and Edith M Jackson are in Howden, E Yorkshire in 1921. Four people named Bulmer at the same address.

This rather suggests that not all Herbert and Mary Jane's children will have been born in Easingwold district.

I can see nine possibles with Mmn Bulmer, as well as those you have named (Ethel Mary 1918, Thomas William 1927, Norman 1934):

Alice Margaret 1921 Howden district (I think she is the same child as Alice Margret Jackson who died in Goole district aged 0 in 1922).

Doris 1922 Goole district

Kathleen 1924 Goole district

Ethel 1925 Howden district

Hannah 1928 York district

Charles Henry 1930 Bedale district

Herbert 1931 Thirsk district

Celia 1935 Great Ouseburn district

(There are a few  Jackson/Bulmer births in Sunderland district during this time period, but I think they belong to a couple who married there in 1930).

The family are (mostly) in Whixley, Yorks. in 1939. Herbert, Mary J, and Elizabeth (birthdate tallies with a birth registered in 1st quarter 1937), plus seven redacted individuals. Oddly, Ancestry's transcript also shows Charles Jackson born 1930, although the image doesn't.

I don't know whether you have seen the 1918 marriage record for Herbert and Mary Jane, but Herbert's father is named Thomas William.

Does your friend know when and where her grandfather died?

I think the Thomas William Jackson born in 3rd quarter 1927 may be the same as Thomas William Jackson dob 24 July 1927 who died in St Helens district in 1989.

It does look a good possible
