Richard Baines b. 1858, Dublin - Parents ?
« on: Sunday 02 June 24 16:11 BST (UK) »
Richard Baines was born on 26 November 1859 in Dublin, Ireland.   He married Sarah Ann Curran in 1879 in Liverpool.  Richard died in 1912 - at sea - serving as crew on the Titanic.

Family records support Richard's father was Lawrence Baines born about 1825 in Dublin.  His mother is unknown.

Grateful for any help to identity Richard's parents

Based on possible match for him on 1891 England census where he is shown as Marine Fireman? in Bootle, Lancs with wife Sarah four children and his mother Mary Curran

There are various trees and mariner records which give slightly differing years of birth - where did the exact looking date you have originate ?

Do you actually have marriage record for Richard - what occupation is shown for his father - any Baines as witnesses ?

Many thanks for your helpful reply.   The 1891 census matches family records, also that Richard's  mother was called Mary.   I have only family records/notes which show Lawrence was born about 1825
I don't have any marriage record.    Guess my request is a long shot and thanks for your interest.

It's the date for Richard that's more important...  problem is that he was born before the start of registration of births, so you have to check for a baptism instead, obviously doing that properly depends on knowing the religion of this family and exactly where in 'Dublin' they lived, i.e. which parish, town or part of the county, i.e. if it was somewhere outside the city. Church records for most parishes in Dublin city area are on the free IrishGenealogy website, mostly Catholic and Church of Ireland - however there are several Church of Ireland parish registers damaged so not available

If that Mary is his mother it looks like she remarried, otherwise why is she shown as 'Curran', so maybe a search for a second marriage for her in England and Ireland might be one line of investigation to follow up on,
I would also suggest checking up on that marriage for Richard and Sarah, a) to confirm his father's name and occupation and b) to check witnesses.. it may also be worth checking for a death for Laurence/Lawrence  (if that's confirmed as his name) in England

edited - that Mary Curran is more likely his mother in law not mother as the census form suggests

How do you know he was born in Dublin?

The parish record of his marriage has the surname as ‘Baynes’.
Lancashire Record Office and GRO indexes have ‘Bains’

You need to search with spelling variations.

I would think that Mary Curran is Sarah’s mother.

What is Laurence’s occupation?

found a Catholic Church marriage record for Richard and Sarah on Ancestry, St. Anthony's Liverpool, confirm father's names as Laurence and John in Latin, unfortunately occupations dont appear as is common with Catholic registers. Witnesses were Daniele Curran and Elizabeth Ray
