Death of David Herbert Philip - Bridgend Tabernacle Lookup Please
« on: Sunday 02 June 24 11:39 BST (UK) »
My 3rd great grandfather David Herbert Philip’s death has proved elusive for over 20 years. He was born illegitimate so sometimes is David Herbert (census returns, childrens births) or David Herbert Philip (marriage certificate.) He was born 30 Jan 1839 and married Catherine Thomas 1860 in Wick, Glamorgan. He worked as an agricultural labourer and they had 2 children- Sarah (1860) and Martha (1863) and according to the 1863 baptism records were living in the union workhouse, Bridgend. On the 1871 census Catherine is a widow living in Cefn Glas, Newcastle, Bridgend and shortly after remarries. I therefore assume David died between 1863-1871 but have never found his death. I have searched for David Herbert/ Herbert Philip/ Philips and any other variation I could think of. I recently read it wasn’t compulsory to register deaths until 1874 but I find it hard to believe his death wasn’t registered somewhere. I know it is a long shot but does anyone have access to the Tabernacle burials for Bridgend to see if he is listed?
Unfortunately I am not local so If anyone is able to help I would be extremely grateful
Sara

There are possibilities such as the couple parted ways and he didn't pass away until much later.

Was Catherine correctly named as a widow - ie she was Mrs Philip - when she remarried?

I had thought had he absconded but think it very unlikely. Catherine lists herself as Catherine Herbert, a widow on the 1871 census and then also remarries 18 Nov 1872 as Catherine Herbert, a widow. So I do believe he died.

Yes that’s probably the case.

Frustrating when you can’t find him for sure.
