Knocktopher
« on: Saturday 18 May 24 14:50 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Looking for information on the village of knocktopher. My stringer family were born there. I'm trying to locate exactly where.  Their address is given as only knocktopher  and the father of the house was a land steward. Would this mean they came from the village centre somewhere? Would any one know if there was a stewards house some where  there?  The time line was  from 1850s to 1900. Thank you

The chances are that he was agent to the Langrishe family who lived in Knocktopher Abbey and owned much of the land in and around the village. I would suggest checking the Griffiths Valuations to see if a land agent's house is mentioned (follow the links at the bottom of the Wikipedia article).

Here's the townland of Knocktopher Abbey, just to the south of Knocktopher. The actual house, Knocktopher Abbey is also just to the south of the village of Knocktopher.

Seeing that name takes me back.  My husband & I spent a week in Knocktopher Abbey some years back as a Time Share exchange.

Very quaint & picturesque.

John Hogg is the land steward in 1901 and he lives in Knocktopher Manor

Looking at the House and Building return it’s a 1st Class house, decent house with 8 windows to the front.

Given that even his youngest child was  born in Scotland, the house possibly came with the job and may be where your family lived.

Thanks so much for the reply. Very helpful. I'm trying to locate the house where the lived LH so that's my reason for posting again.  The hogg connection  makes total sense! Thank you. Might be on to a winner there. I lived in the area myself years ago before I knew the family connection so would love to actually pinpoint the house. Thanks everyone  so much
