REED, Edward Hall (1866-1937) & Bridget 'Jetta' Gray (1868-1937)
« on: Thursday 16 May 24 03:09 BST (UK) »
I am seeking to contact descendants of Edward Hall Reed (1866-1937), who was born in Jarrow.  Living at Wyngarth, Sunderland Road, Cleadon, he died on 22 June 1937.  Reed married Bridget Gray (1868-1937), known as Jetta, on 27 January 1886 at St. Paul, Jarrow.  The 1901 and 1911 census returns record his occupation as a consulting engineer, living at Red House Farm, Jarrow.

They had seven children that I know of:

Albert Edward Reed 1886-1886

Ethel Annie Dickinson (nee Reed) 1887-1971 [married Robert Dickinson (1887-1950), daughter Ethel Doreen Dickinson (1918–2011) who married Whittle]

Charles Wesley Reed 1890-1890

Thomas Harbottle Reed 1891-1954 [married Alice Maud Howard (1893–1973), children Muriel Reed (1918-) who married Drebner, Charles Edward (1919-)]

Margaretta Jane Chipchase (nee Reed) 1894-1984 [married Robert Stanley Chipchase (1886-1971) in 1918, son Kenneth Reed Chipchase (1919-1974) who married Josephine Sheila Skelton (1920-2019), one daughter, two sons.]

William Ernest Reed 1896-1952 [married Ethel Doreen Allard (1902-1983), sons Rev Denys Adrian Reed (1925-1982) and Gordon Allard Reed (1929-1992)]

Lawrence Fenwick Reed 1908-1981

I had a look at Margaretta Jane Chipchase -nee Reed, and found that her son Kenneth Reed Chipchase became a Surgeon, and there are reports together with a photograph of him in the newspaper recording an important role he played in the second world war when he was aged 24 years and Surgeon Lieut on the sloop Magpie. He was required to go on board another ship where a man was critically injured, and he performed an operation to save his life. Six U- boats were sunk during this conflict he was involved in. I have found the names of the three children born to Kenneth and his wife Jo, which you may already have. If not I will need to send them to you directly. (Don't put your email address or phone number on here, as it is an open forum) just let me know if you already have the information of their names.
Regards.

Many thanks Paco for your reply.  Although I knew that Kenneth Reed Chipchase had served in the navy, I did not know that story, which is very interesting.  Please could you send me the newspaper clip or reference. I think I have the names of his three children but no more.

I got the information from Findmypast, but don't know if you have access to this. As I said there is a photograph of Kenneth Reed Chipchase, and quite interesting information. If you don't have access then I can tell you the newspaper was The Shields Gazette dated 20th March 1944.

I no longer have access to Find My Past, but thank you for the reference Paco.  I am particularly interested in seeing the photo.

Lawrence Fenwick Reed, married P Marshall in 1932, at the  Presbyterian chapel.
I don't have full access to newspapers but it looks like he was awarded the Baden Powell medal for saving a boy from Drowning,

Thanks Radcliff.  The drowning story seems to concern someone else.
