Elizabeth Kingsnorth, Staplehurst / Tenterden
« on: Wednesday 08 May 24 23:49 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm hoping that someone may be able to help as I am stuck!

I have got back as far as Judith WELLS (1739 - 1765). She married Francis EASTON in Biddenden in 1761.

She was born in Staplehurst to John and Elizabeth WELLS.

John married Elizabeth KINGSNORTH on 26th October 1736 in Staplehurst.

I have had difficulty finding information about Elizabeth KINGSNORTH. There is a baptism in Tenterden in May 1710 for an Elizabeth born to Thomas and Sarah KINGSNORTH.

I have not been able to find a marriage for Thomas and Sarah KINGSNORTH.
There is a marriage of a Thomas KINGSNORTH and Sarah GOSLING in Gillingham, Kent in 1718 but this is 8 years after Elizabeth's (apparent) birth and baptism.

Many trees online list this Thomas and Sarah as Elizabeth's parents, and while I appreciate relationships at that time were not as "pristine" as we might think, marrying 8 years later and many miles away seems odd!

There is a baptism for a Sarah GOSLING in Rochester, Kent in 1693 which is not far from Gillingham, but I cannot fathom how she would go from Rochester to Tenterden and back to Gillingham (to marry), for her daughter Elizabeth to then end up in Staplehurst in the 1730s.

Does any one have any thoughts or leads on the above, or an alternative marriage for Thomas & Sarah?

Any advice is much appreciated!

Kind Regards,

Joel Simons

Elizabeth KINGSNORTH is noted as a widow on that 1736 marriage image.  (John is a widower)

They are both of the parish of Staplehurst.

There is a burial at Staplehurst Oct 17th 1735 of Ann, wife of John Wells.

28 Oct 1726, Staplehurst Richard KINGSNORTH married Elizabeth EDMETT.  Both otp.
15 Feb 1727/28 (dual calendar) Richard KINGSNORTH (a dissenter) was buried

Best I can see for Elizabeth is baptism at Rolvenden, 19 Mar 1704, dau of Robert & Mary EDMET

There is a burial at Rolvenden for an Elizabeth Edmet in 1714 ….it doesn’t say daughter of… so hopefully that is an older Elizabeth

Added..  Robert’s mother perhaps.
A Robert Edmet baptised 05 Apr 1678. Rolvenden. Son of James & Elizabeth

In 1742 an Elizabeth Adams - widow left £5 each to William Wells of Staplehurst and John Wells of Staplehurst.

She was Elizabeth Boys as her brother is mentioned William Boys of Bodiham/Bodiam Sussex.

There is a William Wells who married Elizabeth Broman ? 2 October 1718 at Staplehurst.

John and William Wells are possibly brothers. Have you found the connection to Elizabeth Adams nee Boys?

ADDED
She appears to be the widow of Thomas Adams of Sandhurst -Yeoman who died 1741. The Wells brothers are not mentioned in his will, so they are relatives on her side of the family.

Plus Richard bap 17 June 1694 son of Richard and Mary

ADDED
So the John and William Wells are her nephews, if Mary Boyse and Elizabeth Boyse are sisters.
