Newburn Parish records 1790s
« on: Monday 06 May 24 14:09 BST (UK) »
Good Afternoon

I have found my husband's 4 x great grandmother's baptism on Free Reg.

Name: Jane Chapman
Baptism: 29 Sep 1793 St Michael and All Angels, Newburn, Northumberland

Father: John Chapman
Mother: Jane

On the baptism record it also states the abode as "Bells Close"

When searching to see whether Jane Chapman had any siblings in the baptism registers I couldn't find any for John Chapman and Jane but I found several children baptised in the same time period to a George Chapman and a Jane (Mackclay) these records all state the abode as "Bells Close." It states they were from Durham originally and I can find their marriage there.

As for John Chapman and Jane there are a couple of potential matches but nothing that I have a paper trail for yet.

Jane WRIGHT
John CHAPMAN   Marriage   23 Nov 1788   Durham   Auckland St Andrew : St Andrew : Bishop's Transcript

Jane HEWSON
John CHAPMAN   Marriage   01 Jun 1783   Northumberland   Berwick-Upon-Tweed : Holy Trinity : Other Transcript

Does anyone have a way to view the original record to see if this is a transcription error and my Jane's father is actually George and not John, or whether there were 2 Chapman families with mothers called Jane in Bells Close at this time.

Many Thanks,

 :)

Thanks for all the replies, lots to get stuck into. I wasn't aware of the Durham online records so that is a great resource. Family History takes you all over the place!
