Census place name query

John and Mary Ann are my husband's 3x great grandparents. I am having difficulty reading Mary's birth place and I wonder if anybody could help please. (Other censuses do not help, because they show a different place each time: variously Carbrook, Cranbrook and Shipton.) I have included the entries above and below in case that helps.

I wonder if "Shipton" is meant to be "Shipdham", only 4 miles from Carbrooke. Though, Ingham is no where in the vicinity.

Thank you. I was having trouble locating Shipton in Norfolk. Do you think Cranbrook might actually be Carbrooke (although the writing is quite clear)?

Not sure, looking at the 1851 census - is that the one you mean? It has John born Norfolk Cranworth and Mary Ann in Norfolk Cranbrook. Possibly the enumerator made a mistake in confusing the two place names, they are in Hornchurch Essex, so the enumerator may not have known (or been able to understand their accent).  :-\

Another possiblity for Mary Ann in the 1861 is Hingham (5 miles from Carbrooke, though in the other direction from Shipdham). Spelt without the "H".

From their children's birth registrations Mary Ann's maiden name was COL(E)MAN. There is a possible baptism at Carbrooke of Mary Ann COLEMAN on 11 August 1811, parents John and Mary COLEMAN.

Just looking at some other COLEMAN's born around the same time in the same area, I see there is a James COLEMAN born c1815 (farm bailiff/steward) - in the 1871 census he says born Hingham, whilst in the 1881 he says born Shipdham. Interesting that there should be those 2 places seemingly equated again.

According to friends who live there, "Shipton" is the local pronunciation for Shipdham, certainly among older inhabitants.
