Hi All,

I am looking for Catherine Holliday born around 1818 in Ireland (although the 1861 and 1881 census says born St Lukes/Whitecross Middlesex).
We are trying to find her place of birth in Ireland.

The family were in and out of St Lukes workhouse from at least January 1861.
Catherine's parents are living with them in 1851 (surname transcribed as Rollowday on Ancestry) but both died in 1856.
Her husband Samuel also dies in the workhouse in 1864.
I found them in the 1861 census at 1 London Passage, St Lukes but for some reason I can only find the record on FindMyPast and not on Ancestry, which is annoying as I am not subscribed. Can anyone find it on Ancestry?

A daughter Eliza is transferred to the Caterham Asylum, Surrey where she is on the 1871 census and dies in 1877 we think. 2 daughters named Ellen die as infants and Mary/Margaret dies in August Q 1861. William marries in 1857.

Catherine is in the workhouse in the 1881 census and then she dies in November the same year, still in the workhouse.

There are various Workhouse admission records for them in Holborn but as far as I can see Catherine should be inside in 1871 but I have been all the way through the entries of St Lukes Workhouse - Shepherdess Walk or City Road Workhouse (Called Holborn Union Workhouse I think in 1871 and 1881) and can't see them. I have also searched the Holborn Union Workhouse in 1861, but I am not sure if in 1871 it was the Grays Inn site that I need (although I couldn't find that on Ancestry).

Can anyone find her anywhere?

Samuel and Catherine in 1861

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2M2-1YLN

Samuel, Catherine and Eliza are at the bottom of one page and abother daughter Mary aged 13 is on the next page but fs don't seem to allow for entries split over two pages.

If it helps to find it on Anc* the ref is RG09/206/F36/p27
Smith Tiplady Boulton Branthwaite King Miller Woolfall Bretherton Archer and many more

But...Eliza's in the Caterham Asylum in the 1871 census (as per your thread). Is it just Catherine you're looking for in 1871? Have you tried searching using her initials?

Fantastic! That really helped. It turns out the image on Ancestry was so faint they hadn’t been able to transcribe the names. I haven’t come across that before. Also I must remember to check other sites when I can’t find something.

Sorry, you are correct it’s just Catherine I am searching for in 1871.
I will try initials again but the inmates in St Luke’s/Holborn Workhouse are all listed with their full names.

Check the 1871 census using just initials (C and H), in case she's an "inmate" somewhere.

This brings up 6000+ hits on Ancestry even if I put exact for C and H. Is there a better way to do it?

I just found some information on a genealogy forum that suggests not many records survive for the Holborn Grays Inn workhouse. Could this be the problem, as I believe in 1871 able-bodied inmates from St Luke’s were sent to the Grays Inn site? I would have thought the census was separate from this though?

I see that Grays Inn (Holborn) workhouse is represented in the 1871 census. Not seeing Catherine, though.

Is she the Catherine Holleday (washerwoman) in the 1881 census? Looks like that woman's birthplace is listed as "Whitecross Street, Middlesex". That would be (or was) near St Luke's.

If the 1861 and 1881 census reports list her birthplace as Middlesex why do you think she's from Ireland? Is it just the 1851 census which gives her birthplace as Ireland? Or do other sources give Ireland as her birthplace?

By the way, I'm seeing five RC baptisms for their children (1839-1850).
