the couple were Patrick Henry b Abt 1851 and his wife  Mary O'Neill  b1852 they were both from Londonderry Northern Ireland, but Mary stated on the 1921 census she was from Greenlough, Londonderry,

Please could you confirm the address for this 1921 census where Mary states she was from Greenlough, Londonderry?

I can only see one marriage of a Patrick Henry in Gateshead in 1876.
He married a Helena Peters (confirmed by a search on Gateshead Council's website) and in 1881 they appear to be living in Felling as Patrick and Ellen Peters.

Just to clarify…….the reason I added this link was because JulieDee doesn’t think this is the same couple.

I have recently contacted Tyne and Wear Archives, but it’s not happening quickly enough.......probably got a backlog of enquiries,

What exactly have you asked Tyne & Wear Archives to do ? You will have to pay a fee for any sort of research. They are understaffed and extremely underfunded.

and though, like everyone else I can't find a matching civil registration of a marriage in Gateshead (or anywhere else) c 1876

this death notice (which has an address that matches for the family in 1901 and 1911) indicates he had been working in Gateshead for 35 years when he died (so he'd been there since at least c 1873)

No idea what the current charges are but last time I enquired, without a specific date this would be classed as a research request and the cost was £30 (not refundable if they can't find it)

I'd suggest that if you have an LDS Family History Centre within reasonable reach, you pay then a visit as the St Joseph's register images (including marriages for the time frame you are looking for) will be available to view on their pcs.
- though IF they married there then I'd expect that it would be registered with Gateshead and there's no sign of it in either the GRO index or Gateshead Registrar's index on their website.

Huge thank you everyone for all your help, yes , I did find Patrick Henry age 20 in Gateshead in 1871,
(re him working for the same chemical firm for 35 years) You have given me very helpful suggestions, such as the local to me LDS family history centre, and Free BMD index......it is back to the drawing board for me.....another thing Mary said on the 1911 census was that they had been married for 35 years, and so I counted back making it 1876, for the wedding, but Patrick died in 1908 so perhaps I should have been counting back from that year ?!!!

Sometimes people counted back to just before the first child was born and said they had been married  then even if they never were.
