Where is she buried?
« on: Wednesday 03 April 24 20:16 BST (UK) »
Hello all

My husbands great grandmother died in 1938. We discovered today, thanks to a newspaper article, that she committed suicide. There is a report on the inquest, but nothing at all about a burial is in the newspapers (that I can find).
I can't find any burial records, but I think that is due to the time period is still not online at the moment.
She lived in a village called Thaxted in Essex. So, I wondered if a) she isn't buried there but in the closest municipal cemetery b) because of her death, her burial was secret or was her body returned to her place of birth in Finchley, London.
Her name was Clara Johnson nee Neville, 1872-1938
Her husband George William Johnson married again a few months later after advertising for a housekeeper/companion in the newspapers!
thanks in advance
Lisa

I would contact the nearest cemetery to where she died and ask if they have a record of her.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Hi Lisa

Finding a burial of an ancestor is one of the hardest things we can try and do in family history.  Usually my first port of call is Findagrave (this is a volunteer lead website) Downside - not all cemeteries have been photographed. They only record graves with markers.

I would also try Deceased Online (£) many councils are now selling this information to Deceased online rather than having to monitor it themselves. They have lots of information. https://www.deceasedonline.com/servlet/GSDOSearch

I don't think a municipal cemetery would 'refuse' to  accept someone because of the type of their death.  It is 1938 we are talking about.

You also  need to consider cremation. And think about crem records.  Try Essex Archives

If no luck also consider if the family had a family plot?  Some did most did not.  Also consider looking for where the husband is buried.  There may be a route back to her resting place.

Kind regards,
CD
