Have you tried the 1939 register, if he was born circa 1930 he should be listed.

Croydon was in Surrey until 1965; indeed it was a Registration District until then too.
In 1965 the London Borough of Croydon came into being. That's still the case today.

I can't find any reference to Croydon in Essex at all?

Is this person still alive?  If so - Rootschat has a strict “no living persons” policy to protect peoples privacy.  The nearest Croydon birth for that name was 1940.

That is why I was querying it KG,  I only know of the Croydon in Surrey
