Mary Morby/Murbie/Murdy - clutching at straws?
« on: Monday 11 March 24 18:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am researching an ancestor, Mary Morby/Murbie/Murby and have some leads, but am not 100% on them.

Mary Morby “marries” John Yule (hawker/basket maker/besom maker & carter) and has eight children; the two of importance are; George (1839, Alnwick) and John (11 Oct 1840-bef 1841, Lane Head (poss Lonning Head?) Newstead). The family is missing from the 1841 census. 1851/61 census states that Mary is born 1818 in Beadnell.

I found a newspaper article; 30 Oct 1858 stating “Michael McGinty, Tweedmouth, charged William Morby and Mary Yule with an assault committed on him. They were found guilty and fined 5s…” making me think that William may be a brother of sorts.

This lead me into this census & baptisms:

1841, South Side of Pottergate Street, Alnwick
George Murdy, 1782-1786
Mary Murdy, 1792-1796
Mary Murdy, 1817-1821
Eleanor Murdy, 1822-1826
William Murdy, 1830
Jane Murdy, 1833
Phoebe Murdy, 1837

Maria Moltby - born 20 Sep 1818, baptised 9 Oct 1818, Ellingham, Northumberland.
Phoebe Morby - baptised 11 Nov 1820 (unnamed in baptism), but has burial record 9 Jul 1821, St Michael & All Angels, Ford, aged 6mths.
Phoebe Mortby - baptised 21 Oct 1822, Wooler.
William Murdy - born 26 May 1829, baptised 7 Jun 1829, Berwick.
Jane Morbwith - baptised 1 Apr 1832, Alnwick.
Phoebe Murby - born 24 Jul 1837, baptised 17 Aug 1837, Ellingham.

George Morbie buried 9 Sep 1843 aged 59, St Anne, Ancroft. Abode Oxford Lane. (Mary & John Yule later have a son, another John Jr. in 1851, baptised at this church, and the abode is also listed as Oxford Lane).

However by 1841, Mary should be in the household with John, George and John Jr, which she isn’t. John Jr’s baptism (16 Nov 1840, Lesbury) mentions their abode is Haddington, Scotland, however I could not find them on the census. And the Maria Mottby/Moltby is the only baptism which matches Mary.

Additionally, George does not have a GRO record, he is baptised as 3 Apr 1839, Alnwick.  I also found a same thread about him; https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=334448.0

It feels somewhat plausible all these connections, but there’s still a lot of things that don’t add up which make me doubtful.  :-\

I was aware Mary had died in 1866 but not when John had died, thank you for that. Also the location info about Oxford Lane / Ancroft is very helpful, I’m not familiar with the area.  :)
