Unusual Surname in Somerset/ Wiltshire Holstat

Hi, Has anyone come across or have any knowledge of the surname Holstat and its various forms Holshoot Holshut Holshod Holeshut. I have several relatives in my direct line with that name. They are around the 1700s but I can't trace them back or forward. I also came across a few Bowshotts in the same register and wondered if that had just been put in by mistake as that name completely disappears too

How can you say that they are your direct line ancestor if you've not been able to trace them forwards? I'm confused.

Sounds Dutch or Germanic to me?

Hi, yes that is what I think too. It was the mother of one of my 5th great grandparents so I would like to trace it. I have tried the various spellings but no real links yet. Thanks for the reply

Eliz buried Jun 1795, age and date not shown

There is a Elizabeth HOLESHUT bapt same Church 05 Oct 1720 to WILLIAM/JOHANA
+ Elexsander HOLESHUTE 04 Nov 1722 (male)

Seems to be the only children bapt there to them

She would be 32 whn married (if the right Eliz) and 45 when John was born.

Wm HOLSHUT was buried 20 Nov 1754 and Joannah 29 Dec 1764

Alexander and Wife Susan nee Millard bapt children 1750-1770 some of whom died.
Susannah was buried 25 Nov 1790
Cant see anything for Alexander

Hi Trish, yes that's exactly it. Elizabeth Holshut marrying James Reynolds is my relative. Alexander and Susannah Holshut were witnesses at the wedding.
He has different parents but they must be related in some way. Thank you for your help. Best wishes Grace

Hi Again, If you look at the baptism of Elizabeth Holshut -it is to William and Joanna and that of Alexander is to John and Joanna, only 2 years apart. I have therefore always treated John and William  as brothers. Alexander and Elizabeth then being cousins which would explain their attendance as a couple at her wedding. Thanks once again.

Sorry you are right I made a mistake re Alexanders bapt as FreeREG does have it as John/Joanna as parents.

Hi Trish, thanks for replying. Yes I have seen the actual image. You can trawl through them on Ancestry at the front page search. This and Stephen Perry have been brick walls for years. I have subsequently found Holdshots in Bradford on Avon and they start with a Peter in the early 1600s. But no evidence of where they originate from. Thank you so much for answering. Best wishes Grace
