Regiments based in Hull
« on: Sunday 11 September 05 10:06 BST (UK) »
I'm in the initial stages of trying to trace which part of the armed forces my ancestor George Grayburn was in ( He appears as a chelsea pensioner on 1851 census)

He lived in Hull 1789 - 1850+ and his son, John was born in Ireland. I understand there was a garrison in the Drypool area. Were particular regiments attached here? I'm not very knowledgeable about army organisation so any help gratefully received.

thanks

Hi Weggyg,
To be a Chelsea Pensioner he would have been in the Army. It would have been helpful for you to have given the d.o.b. of the son, I too have a relative that was stationed at Hull, married there in 1823 and his son was born in Ireland in 1824, He was then in the 66th Regt of Foot.
Hope this helps as far as it goes.

Thanks this is worth investigating

John was born in 1826 so this might fit. Did you manage to find birth details from Ireland - if so, how? I am failing with every search I try.

Hi Wendy,
Unfortunately not, non-conformist records in Ireland did not start until 1860's and if baptism happened to be in a Garrison church, in many cases the Army Padres took their records with them when they moved.
I was fortunate in that my g'g'gfather joined the Police after leaving the Army and I have to accept what he told them at enlistment there.

Hello,
Here is Margaret from Canada.   I am working on my family history for a while, I hired someone from Glasgow who do works for me in Edinburgh.   One of records that my ggg grandfather James Brannen (Brennan/Brannan) was born at garrison in Hull, England.

Last year I was back home for holidays in Dundee, Scotland I went to Dundee Library doing research on microfilm census 1851 from Montrose to look for my gggg grandfather Edward Brennan.  I found that he was listed as Chelsea pensioner.  At that time I did not know what regiments that he joined.   So I got idea to send e-mail to Hull Archives to see if they can help me to find birth record on James, or his parents marriage, also I requested them to give me information on garrisons in Hull,..  then Hull Archives send me e-mail that they cannot find the birth record or marriage record but they did provided me all different regiments that were in Hull in 1800's.   They also told me try to contact other office in East-Reading I requested same thing.   BINGO, they found my gggg grandparents Edward Brennan and Isabella Rae's marriage record that was included 88th regiment at Drypool parish church in Hull, England on Feb 20 1820.

Then I hired another researcher to do works for me at National Archives to find army papers.   88th Foot (Connaught Rangers) was in Hull from 1819 until 1820 they moved down to Chester and Liverpool before they returned to Ireland.   My gggg grandfather Edward was discharged from army in 1822 unfit and illness.

Today I am still frustrated i am still looking for my ggg grandfather James birth record but still nothing ...
 :(
I already requested to have photocopies on army papers on Edward from Kew very soon.

Please let me know if you have any luck to find birth records at garrisons.

thanks for your time.
Maggie

I think I've found him, under a different spelling, on the discharge records.

WO 97/363/61
GEORGE GRAYBOURN Born YORK, Yorkshire Served in 15th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 36
1808-1826

The 15th (Yorkshire East Riding) Regiment of Foot 1st Btn were in Ireland from 1822. ( http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/015-1.htm )

For army birth records, you can try the overseas birth indexes
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/searchingforoverseasrecords/index.asp#0
(which are also online at www.1837online.com)
These records are then ordered like normal birth certificates (I'm think not everyone is listed but worth a try.)
