You do need to go through all the Wayland children and the married Wayland children from the sister Ada's marriage to William. To double check none may have been born illegitimately and taken to the USA to save any family embarrassment.

Not sure about family embarrassment as it's now looking possible that Wayland fathered a few children of a single woman (which is where my DNA match comes in) in the mid 1890s.  He visited them in the workhouse once their mother became mentally ill and was sent to an asylum. I have another thread somewhere else about that.

I have just had a message from Ivy's great grandson.  To say that his mother (daughter of Ivy) said the family nickname for her grandmother (ie Ivy's mother) was Wella Wella.  Not sure how significant that is.

Sandra I need to revisit this whole family as you suggested, but have been busy with the present day for a few months.  Back to dusty documents eventually!

Going sideways again on the William Caldwell trail - someone researching their Caldwells has identified more about his parents and when adding them to the tree I'm building, Anc hinted an obit in Canada in The Gazette; Publication Date: 16 Dec 1942; Publication Place: Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

A parent William and child Stewart are mentioned. No idea which person died, and if it has any connection to 'my' William.

Please could someone look up this obit for me as I don't have a sub to this news archive?

Thanks very much.

Thanks so much Sandra.

That rules him out then - emeritus professor.  So not going to go from master mariner to that sphere. Back to the drawing board.

Post 141:
Well in the 1899 city directory (compiled 1898) we have the last listing of Brown&Connor in Chicago, then we have the March 1903 newspaper announcement of the new business Caldwell&Anderson opening at 2 Oliver Row, South Bend.

I have been in touch with a William Caldwell researcher.  He found a newspaper cutting 1909-02-26_Chicago-Tribune (can't post the image here).  It says:

STATE OF ILLINOIS, CUNTY [sic!] OF COOK - SS - PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that the partnership heretofore existing between the undersigned under the firm name of BROWN & CONNER, has this day been dissolved by mutual consent. The undersigned, FRANCES E. PRIEST, has sold all her right, title, and interest in said co-partnership, including the good will, trade name, etc. to JANET I. CALDWELL.  All outstanding indebtedness due said co-partnership shall be paid to the said JANET I. CALDWELL, who also assumes all outstanding liabilities.
JANET I. CALDWELL will continue the said business under the style and name of BROWN & CONNER, at the present location, 514-518 Venetian Bldg., Chicago, Ill.
JANETE I. CALDWELL
FRANCES E. PRIEST
Chicago Feb 25 1909

So was Frances Priest nee Conner, or perhaps Conner was a previous owner.

Edit: wrong about Frances, forgot about finding Helen Conner.
