More good finds - some confirm but others not so sure about. Would this person be a smith’s striker and then become an auditor? Perhaps the wrong John Brown. Such a common name. And Jeanette gives Emma WOODS not MOULD as MMN. Her father could have remarried though.

No I deleted that census - remembering John arrived about 1877.  If you read his obit he started off working on a farm, then he went to singer and then back to a farm.  He then went to work as a clerk and a book - keeper before tendering for the position as auditor.

I have a vague recollection of reading of a John M Brown in a solicitors office which may or may not have been this John - who knows.  :)

Don't forget David Brown remarried ..........

A lot to digest.

This may be the most important certificate you need to access on Scotlands People.

Woohoo you’re on a roll today.

Thanks and I’ll pursue that birth once back home on my computer at the weekend.

After 18 pages it looks like you’ve nailed it. Fingers crossed!

Just received Janet Brown’s birth cert. Confirming the right person although I think Janet and Jeanette are pronounced differently. Perhaps Jeanette sounded French and suited the millinery/fashion trade?

Hi Sandra

I'm just compiling a timeline with Janet Brown, her siblings, and Ivy, to spot the gaps in info, and guessing where people might be.

And making a wishlist on Scotland People to be sure to only pay for the best search results. You found a possible Ivy as Isabella Caldwell MMN Brown for 1891 (but no clue to the quarter) in Nielston, and I've found on the 1891 census (held in April) an Isabella Caldwell 1 year old in Partick.  If the birth is Ivy then it would be March so she'd only be one month old. I need to check how babies' ages were entered. The transcript says 1, so that might be month or year.

Caldwell is a commonish name in the area, as is Brown, but I found a marvellous memorial headstone in Edinburgh that gives lots of family details. The vault or plot of John Brown and wife Janet Skinner, parents of David Miller Brown.  An Edinburgh family.

I'm just looking to see if any of Janet Brown's family were alive and in Scotland at about the right time for the 1891 birth and accommodation for them both.

I will update here once I've looked at all the possibilities.
