Not sure this will help but the mention  of Kent was interesting maybe. ??
Probably a red-herring.  :-\

U.S., Border Crossings from Canada to U.S., 1895-1960
(Bit scratchy to try and read  :-\)

Jane F Brown. Born 1870 Kent. England. (aged 40 years) Wid.
Last permanent address Brighton. No relations in country from whence came.
In transit - Arrival April 1910
Port of Arrival   Portal, North Dakota.
Landed 27/09 Empress of Britain.

Sandra

Hmm. Also says final destination England.  Does that fit with anything we know?  Need to read this thread from start to finish again!

I have come across a Janet Frances Brown - somewhere.  Could be her, so not Janet Isabell.

Edit: I remember now, she was the widow of William F Brown and listed in a city directory - South Bend or Chicago.

Wot Jonw65 said!  Brilliant.  Sherlock Sandra.

So there was a William Caldwell.  Wonder when they married?  Now I'm thinking that if Janet and William were both English, would their child be English or a US citizen at birth?  If the former then she wasn't necessarily born in England.  The year she states she immigrated (1893) might just be the year that Janet immigrated? And Ivy muddled up her info.

Also re your other clipping, it would seem that the millinery company was not just about millinery.

We just need a birth announcement in a local paper in Chicago or South Bend for Ivy Isabel(la) Caldwell now....

That's a great find Sandra! Wonder where they married and what William's occupation was. There was a William CALDWELL, policeman in Indiana in the early 1890s I remember looking at a few accounts of him in newspapers, but it is a reasonably common name - I think from memory there was also a William CALDWELL around this time arrived from Edinburgh to lecture at Chicago University. There are a few others as well, just to make it difficult!

Well in the 1899 city directory (compiled 1898) we have the last listing of Brown&Connor in Chicago, then we have the March 1903 newspaper announcement of the new business Caldwell&Anderson opening at 2 Oliver Row, South Bend.

Which could mean they married between 1898 and 1903 but probably at the beginning of this period since they divorced in 1904.

Ivy stated her birth date as 1891 and arrival in the US as 1893.  Ivy was 27 in the 1920 census (birth 1893ish), 39 in the 1930 census (birth 1890ish and stated age at marriage of 24 - that was in 1914, making birth 1890ish). 1940 census she was 46 (so birth 1894ish).

It's still looking like Ivy was born before they married, and she was likely to be Jeanette/Janet's daughter rather than stepdaughter as she had the same middle name of Isobel (or just a popular name and a coincidence?). So we're looking for an Ivy Isobel Brown birth 1890-95 and possibly in Lakeside, Chicago, where Brown&Connor were first listed in the 1897 city directory, compiled 1896?

That’s fantastic Sandra so very well done!  It’s taken a lot of work so very grateful.

I think I need tuition in effective searching  :-\

Once I get Janet Brown’s birth cert I’ll post the info in here and then I can work on the Wayland in Kent connection.

One wall falls to reveal the next…but so delighted with this thread.
