I know what you mean.

I thought I'd look for an I Brown or I Caldwell travelling from England to the US 1890-1900 but not getting anywhere with that either.

Back to looking for Connor of Brown and Connor....

Is a milliner more likely to be a woman?  In the millinery section of trade directories, quite a few are.

Looking for any Connor:
South Bend and Mishawaka directories in the Millinery section and alphabetical names:
1903 nothing under Mishawaka, but South Bend city directory has Conner, Nathan (Eva) wks S W Woollen Co, res 435 N Lafayette
1905 has Conner, Eva wid (Nathan)

1903 has Connor, George G (Delia M) draying, res 508 E La Salle Ave
would expect a milliner to be female but she's not listed in the milliners section

1901 no Connor or Conner.  No Connor or Caldwell or Brown listed under Milliners.

Hmm, was Connor an invention too?

Sandra have you come across any newspaper entries for Brown & Connor, or Caldwell & Anderson at all?

Thanks for these Sandra. I don’t think there was a Connor or an Anderson. It just made it sound a bigger firm?

I’m wondering where there’s an archive of all the Millinery Trade Review journals to see when Brown & Connor first appeared in South Bend.

There was a Beda Anderson  (aged 34 in 1920 - so I discounted her from being in business with Janet Caldwell back in 1905 Indiana )
Bede Anderson in Chicago in 1920 described as a milliner - line 91 - a border with the Madden family.
