No J Caldwell or J Brown or Bede Anderson or milliner Connors/Conners in 1901 South Bend city directory. Nothing relevant at North Main St either.

No millinery business at 203 North Main St in the 1903 directory.  No J Caldwell or Brown either.

Hi
I was having the same thoughts as you about William Caldwell and his relationship with Janet and Ivy!

As to the Janet Brown on the Gallia passenger list, I think she may be indexed on the outward one from UK as Janet J Brown (Janer J on ancestry). I haven't seen the image though, usually there is not much info on them back then.

The London Gazette, 6 June 1939, has a KB being made a Member of the Civil Division of the said Most Excellent Order
Miss Kathleen Browne, Honorary Secretary,
Empire Day Movement.

I guess that's an MBE. Could that be her?

I've looked at the image for the Janet Brown passenger and the whole document is in a bit of a state. There is no more info than that I posted earlier.

Re the MBE, yes that's her.  Wayland, her future husband, was involved with the Empire Day Movement.  He probably nominated her.  A case of who you know!  Also might be how she met Wayland in the first place.

Are you old enough to remember Empire Day? I remember we paraded around the playground at infant school waving flags.

Hi
I'm afraid I can't remember Empire Day. Or even when we had an empire! I can remember the old money, that's about it.

Amazing information found on this thread, well done to all. I must agree, my thoughts from the first were that there was a high chance the father "William CALDWELL" was an invention. Though I do find the line in the article jon found: "Mrs. Caldwell, whose maiden name was Miss Janet Brown" interesting. Does this imply some people knew her as Janet BROWN, implying a marriage in the US, or is it simply trying to make a connection with the "Brown and Connor" name.  :-\
