Birth of Ivy CALDWELL abt 1891

Chances are that Ivy Isabel ? was not a Caldwell.  Born 1891 and the Caldwell marriage in Montreal 1900.  Ivy may not have been her real name. Nothing showing under Brown either.

There is nothing in the Caldwell line - father William Caldwell passed 1898 (no mentions of family in death notices) - Mother Mary Wilson Caldwell 1872.

Father remarried in 1875 to Mary Mathie -  Mary passed in 1916 (no mention of William (her step-son) in that death notice - William and the second wife had 2 children James and Edith (1880)

It is looking like a needle in a haystack.  How did Janet Brown meet William Caldwell before they both travelled to Canada to marry?  Presumably she went to him as his ship had docked there.

There is some confusion with too many William Caldwells and Marys. 

William Caldwell b 1824 writer/clerk and father of WC the mariner married Mary Wilson (1837-72). They had one child, WC the mariner. On her death he married Mary Mathie (1841-1916 and a cousin of MW). They had two children, James and Edith Helen.

Mary Wilson's mother was another Mary Mathie (1811-89). And a Daniel Mathie (1818-53) married a Mary just to introduce another Mary Mathie.  So lots of family trees have got this mixed up, along with Anc hints.

Wonder if the mariner died at sea? Although still alive getting married in 1900 after his father had died.

Prob a typo but William Caldwell was born 1834 not 1824.

Thanks for all that Sandra - I know I don’t exploit Family Search well. I had no idea that death notices were there.

Back to Janet Caldwell - was the lack of support from Willm C (that led to her divorcing him) in fact because he’d died unbeknown to her? Bit unlikely though.

I also need to go back through this thread and notes because Janet and Ivy might have been in Canada during a census 🤞 I think Janet’s missing from some US censuses? If she can be found earlier than 1909 when Ivy first appears (in college records) then she might be with a child.

Or Ivy lived in Canada for a while and long enough to be picked up in a census there.

Need to search for age/birth year rather than name in the Indiana census to see if a potential Ivy turns up too. If it’s raining tomorrow that’ll keep me busy.
