Scramblers Court, Annan

I am trying to find out where scramblers court was in annan about 1900. My gt gt grandfather's 2nd wife died there in 1902in poverty. Anyone know if any photos ormaps exist about that time.

This https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17.8&lat=54.98710&lon=-3.26091&layers=168&b=1 is a plan of Annan surveyed in 1898 and published in 1899. It's a typical mediaeval layout with lots of long narrow closes or courts opening off the High Street.

Only some of them are named, unfortunately.

If I were you I would try to find your step-great-great-grandmother in the 1901 census to see if she was in Scambler's Court then, and then look at the rest of the enumeration district to see where Scambler's Court was in relation to other addresses.

Thanks. I have just done that and it shows Scamblers Court Hotel and she was supported by the parish. I suspect it was a poor house. Thanks for your reply.

Not much help, but an article in the March 7th 1917 issue of the Dumfries and Galloway Standard (mail Bag Robbery, Annan Boys' Daring Crime) describes an accused man "Francis Sherry, of Scamblers' Court, off High Street"

The 1902 valuation roll seems to list 4 houses in Scamblers Court, Fish Cross, Annan.

Fish Cross is at the east end of the high street.

Where were your g grandparents in the 1901 Census?

There is a 1901 census entry for a Douglas family who show as living at 1 Scamblers Court Hotel High St. Annan. Also a 70 yr old Margaret Scott at 2 Scamblers Court Hotel High St. In terms of occupation, she shows as 'Supported By Parish' so looks to have been in receipt of financial support.

If you check the original  image of the census on SP, it should help you to see what the surrounding properties to Scambler's Court were to help you futher in terms of location.

The mention of Fish Cross by Forfarian is very helpful here.
