Irish Policeman
« on: Tuesday 10 August 04 22:18 BST (UK) »
Is there anwhere that I can find details of a Police Constable called John Cullen born in Ireland in 1855. I understand that there were a number of policemaen recruited from Ireland. I know that he lived in Walthamstow but am not sure of which metropolitan force that he was with. I thought it might be a place to start my research of his ancestry in Ireland. Do the metropolitan police have old archives? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello Laurel,

Walthamstow is in Essex.

There is a police museum which holds records dating back to
about 1840. You can contact them to see if your ancestor was a policeman
in their force.
An initial name search will not cost you anything but, copies of service
records (if found) can be supplied for a minimal feel.

Hope this helps with your search.....Good luck.

Hello Laurel,
By coincidence I have also been trying to trace a John Cullen born @ 1855 Manorhamilton Co Leitrum
Ireland. He married Emma Elizabeth Young on 14th September 1878 in Edmonton. He is believed to of
joined the Metropolitan Police  1876 on 'N' division. I am waiting for confirmation on this and hopefully it will give a link back to Ireland.I am also looking for Young ,Foster,Hercock,Webb.....Have more information.......Would you be related to Robert Wright ??

Hi Skippy,
Thanks you for your help - I have just found out that he lived in Walthamstow after leaving the force and so the Walthamstow address was a red herring - sorry. I am awaitng my registration details from www.policeorders.co.uk to find out further info. Many thanks anyway.

Hi Cabe (or should I say second cousin?),
I don't think that we have ever met but I am Bob's daughter. I have just spoken to my Dad and would love to hear of any information that you have gleaned on the Fosters, Youngs, Cullens and Hercocks. As for the Webbs, they are on my mums side of the family - not my Dad's - but wouldn't it be a spooky coincidence if we found that we were related on that side as well!!!!
Lovely to hear from you.

Hi Cabe,

Thanks very much for that - it was very kind of you. Given me yet another direction to investigate! I will be in touch shortly - Dad has given me your mums email address.
P.S I got our 'relationship' wrong - should be 2nd cousin once removed!....
I think.....
Kind regards

Hiya Laurel,

It is possible that John Cullen was born in Ireland and joined the Constabulary in Ireland before joining the Police in England. I have borrowed a book from the library. It is by Jim Herlihy and is called "The Royal Irish Constabulary. A Complete Alphabetical List of Officers and Men, 1816-1922" The name and registration number enable you to find the service record on microfilm. These are available at PRONI, Balmoral Avenue, Belfast; the Garda Museum and Archives, The Round Tower, Dublin Castle and The Royal Ulster Constabulary Museum in Belfast.
