John Hopkins

Son of Edward Hopkins, gatekeeper

Married Nov 25 1848 at Calary CoI

Sarah Smyth
Daughter of Edward Smyth, farmer
resided at Glasnamullen

Edward Hopkins
of Edenderry , Co. Offaly
son of John Hopkins, gatekeeper
son of above couple???

married Oct 5 1887
Ellen Magill
of Edenderry , Co. Offaly
Daughter of Edward Smyth, farmer
resided at Glasnamullen

John Edward Hopkins
of Edenderry , Co. Offaly
born 1 Aug 1888
son of above couple
1901 resided with grandmother Sarah Hopkins, gatekeeper

John Edward Hopkins
of Edenderry , Co. Offaly
born 1 Aug 1888
son of above couple
1901 age 12 resided with grandmother Sarah Hopkins, gatekeeper

Richard George Hopkins
of Edenderry , Co. Offaly
born 15 Sep 1892
son of above couple
1901 age 8 resided with grandmother Sarah Hopkins, gatekeeper

I CONCLUDE that Edward Hopkins (above) was
son of John Hopkins and Sarah Smyth (above)

HOWEVER
Edward Hopkins of Edenderry
died 22 Dec 1931 at age 82
informant was son “George” of Edenderry

I CONCLUDE that this Edward Hopkins who died 1931 at 82 was born circa 1850
son of John Hopkins of Powerscourt and Sarah Smyth of Powerscourt

HOWEVER
John Hopkins of Powerscourt and Sarah Smyth of Powerscourt registered a son
Edward Sydenham Hopkins in 1864....

There would not be two sons named Edward

Can anyone help with information on this family?

*just to say that you have given the wrong father for Ellen in your record

Thank you all for your input.

I am still confused about this family

Edward Hopkins of Edenderry, Kings Co who married Mary Ann Smith in 1900 was born about 1851 according to the 1911 Census.  At marriage his father was listed as John Hopkins - gatekeeper.

Edward Sydenham Hopkins had a father John Hopkins who was also a gatekeeper..BUT HE WAS BORN 1864 NOT C1851

Can anyone shed some light on this?   Were there TWO JOHN HOPKINS - GATEKEEPERS???

There are several Poluce Gazette, Ireland notices on Ancestry - all the same and referring to the same date - January 1877.

‘Description of Sydney Hopkins native of Powerscourt. ……absconded and stole the sum of £2 from his father, John Hopkins.’
He is described as 13 yrs. I wonder if he could be Edward Sydenham.

It’s not unheard of to call two children the same name and use their second name on a daily bases.
I would think the Sydney heywood found is Edward Sydenham and the other Edward is an earlier child either originally named Edward or John Edward or similar.

It would be good to find another record of Edward S but perhaps they never found him.
His baptism is in the church records on Irish Genealogy but unfortunately no other baptisms for this family.

Added the notice about Sydney going missing on the 17th Jan is also in the Freemans Journal 27 Jan, it doesn’t mention the money but gives a detailed description of him and ends with John Hopkins, Enniskerry Post Office.
