heywood has supplied the link to his Seaman's Pouch. This file is like a safety deposit box for documents. It may or may not contain a lot of information but there is usually a CR1 card with his ID photo in there.
His full service record will be held in a form CRS 10 which is held at TNA Kew in piece BT 382/778 -
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10989003
If he served later that say 1964 then you should also check this file: BT 382/2457 -
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10990681
CRS 10 files are held in a block of up to 60 other names so it is best to visit Kew or obtain via a researcher. Given the approx date he left the service, I would suggest you check both the files I have indicated. His records will be in one of them.
Regards
Hugh
