Steam Boat Tavern Hull
« on: Thursday 21 December 23 14:55 GMT (UK) »
My wife’s 4 x great grandfather, James Wheat 1820-1882 was listed as beer house keeper in the 1871 census living at Steam Boat Tavern, Humber Street, St Mary’s, Hull, East Riding. Does anyone know if a picture exists of the Tavern and any  information  about the tavern gratefully received?

This is the building now.

My GG Grandfather was proprietor in 1881.

It was never demolished in the end (as per the article above)

Not the history of the Tavern itself, however there a few articles that mention Thomas LUNN of 10 Humber St had in his possession a document supposedly dating to 1592 describing the warrant for and execution of a Stephen WILLISON who stole one shilling and threepence.

eg: Friday,  May 12, 1865
Publication: Hull Packet

I note also that Thomas LUNN (born c1812, master mariner) is at 10 Humber St in 1861 with his wife Elizabeth and children. The census does not indicate that the residence is a public house at this time.

This is really interesting thank you, it seems my ancestor (George Shaw) was only at the tavern for a short time.

I was surprised how often the licence changed hands.  :)
