In the Dog House
« on: Wednesday 20 December 23 12:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I'm researching my family in particular the Kitchingman branch and I've come across a Joseph Kitchingman baptised at St Peter's church in Birstall West Yorkshire. He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Wilson married in the same church on 12 Feb 1782. Thomas was born in 1761 in Mirfield. The baptism record shows the place they lived as "Dog House" (see attached) I've tried looking at old OS maps and I've been in touch with the Bagshaw Museum in Birstall but no one has heard of it. Can anyone help.

Spotted this item in the Leeds Intelligencer, 13 Jun 1838 - but doesn't specify location of farm

There's Mathew Tomlinson, age 75 at "Doghouse. Alverthorpe with Thornes (?)" - 2 households - on the '41 Census..

The Tomlinsons seem to have been at Doghouse Farm Lupset which is near Wakefield

JenB,
Many thanks - great descriptions of Xmas Day.

Fromaty/Frumenty always reminds me of Hardy's "Mayor of Casterbridge" where Henchard's ruin is caused by drinking "furmity" laced with rum.

I had checked out Alverthope and chasing Lupset takes me to within spitting distance of Alvethorpe.

Here's the Alverthorpe with Thornes 'Doghouse' https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.3&lat=53.66702&lon=-1.53021&layers=6&right=ESRIWorld

Whether its the one referred to in the original enquiry is another matter  :-\

Edit - see next posting for what likes like the correct Doghouse.

Looking at the Genuki page for Birstall, one of the constituent townships was Liversedge.

Which leads to this entry in the 'Place names of South-West Yorkshire':

NORRISTHORPE, Liversedge, is a name of modern creation, the hamlet being formerly called Doghouse.
