Recently some new info came to light via another thread that has a bearing on this. The inquest refers to a woman named Christina Vernon aged 40.  This was off putting - wrong surname, wrong age - but she gave her next of kin as Maydwell in Sea Lake which was a clincher.  In a thread called More from Tasmania ( or similar) Ranolki (?) asked about Vernons in Tasmania and it all fits. I’m in Egypt and working on my phone. Will send more.

The handwritten inquest document shows her age as 20, not 40.

I beg your pardon. It must have been the death certificate that said 40.  After all, it would have been clear from the girl’s appearance that she was not 40!
I thought the Vernon false name was random and anyway didn’t know why it was needed. The Tasmania thread shows her mother farmed there briefly under that name.  The point I’m trying to make - not very effectively - is that the handed down story has been substantiated in several ways thanks to the rootschat expert researchers I think.

I was the person from who supplied the family story handed down about Christina, which was found in a Bamix box after my mother's death in 2007, which contains various family research from her father's family (Coutts). At some point she began to gather information on my father's side of the family (Povey) with Christiana being my great great grandmother. I am happy to email this to anyone who would like a copy of it. I do not know where my mother obtained this information from.... possibly from my grandmother Ianthy Maydwell who was the granddaughter of Christiana.

In 2020, I shared this with HappySearcher, and also in 2020, I shared with her images that I had found of Christiana when she was residing in Sea Lake in the book Then Awake Sea Lake.

David, that research was pivotal to my own searching, as were the relevant pages from the book that you refer to. That book has since been updated and a new edition published.  A community forum called Advance Sea Lake Inc. is selling the book. For my own part, I have written a fictionalised biography of Christiana Whitfield’s life which may be of interest to some. It’s called Mrs Maydwell’s Coffee Palace and is available on Amazon as an ebook or paperback or through booksellers (ISBN 978191767347). I have credited rootschat and you, David, in the acknowledgements and I thank you all again here.
