Michael Spain Naval Record 1860s
« on: Friday 03 November 23 19:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Michael Spain was born in Blandford Forum, Dorset in c1844.

At the time of the 1861 census he was serving on a vessel called the Implacable as a Boy of the 2nd Class, but I cannot find him after that…

Would someone be kind enough to try to find his Naval Service record, as this might give some indication of what happened to him, eg how long he served for.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Ju

It does have physical description of him which may be helpful to the OP. He signed up for 10 years service from the age of 18 but of course that doesn't mean he actually did serve that long.

There is a Michael Spain the right age, married with his wife and children in Galway, Ireland in 1901. It states they are Roman Catholic.

Your Michael was Baptised in the Roman Catholic Church in Spetisbury, Blandford. it may be worth you looking for more information on the family in Ireland.

Thank you all for your replies.

The Michael Spain I’m looking for is definitely the one baptised at Spetisbury.

His father, Cornelius, was born in Dublin in c1818 & married his mother, Elizabeth, in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, in 1838. Cornelius was a hawker & the family were living in Devon at the time of the 1851 census.

Michael’s younger brother, Thomas, also served in the Navy & then settled down in Hampshire. Thomas’  naval record gives a list of all the ships he served on & the date he left the navy, so I was hoping there might be something similar for Michael, but finding out what happened to him is proving to be as difficult as tracking down his father’s death…

Thanks again,

Ju
