Odd DNA match

Hi everyone. I've just got a 5th - 8th cousin match on Ancestry. It predicts the match from both sides of my family. My parents married in 1945, so I'm really not sure where this match has come from. Am I missing something obvious? Many thanks

Ancestry has recently expanded their manipulation systems to assign DNA matches by parent and others left at unassigned.

Fairly recently the latest update includes for DNA matches who match on Both sides, I myself have 16 assigned as such with the highest match sharing 21cM with me.  This one is predicted as a 4-6C whereas the remainder are 5-8C.

On my Wife’s tree she has 5 assigned to both sides but the listing includes one who is show as Paternal so something is amiss with Ancestry’s system.

It is possible to have a tree where families mix on both Parental and Maternal lines, for me finding the link given the time periods involved and other factors will be problematic.

I had  1 both sides match - my son, then a few weeks ago it jumped to 16 both side matches. 1 is 4 / 6 cousin the rest 5 / 8 cousins.

Now my parents came from different parts of the country although in my mother's tree there are a number of illegitimate births and who the fathers were is anyone's guess, but I do wonder if they are correct, oh and the few with trees online come from completely different parts of the country.

Most of the 'both side' matches that appeared after the recent update are reported to be low cM values. Most people think in terms of a link being to their parents or perhaps grandparents when the reality is a link (if it truly exists), is likely to be much further back than most people appreciate. The common ancestor(s) to such distant cousins are so far back there may not be a paper trail to support the dna evidence and they may even be false matches.
