If William did not die before Caroline remarried this will be the earliest case of this kind I have on my tree. An odd scenario, nobody with him in their tree knows anything about him.

Maybe odd, but not uncommon. Divorce was very rare, as it was a very expense pursuit.
The marriage certificate should answer your questions about William. :)
