In a part of his statement of the service it says:
"Corps and Battns= 1st Class A Reserve Section C"
But I don't know what that means.
The Reserve consisted of soldiers who had completed the regular part of their commitment ( either the first 7 years of their 12 engagement (typically the Infantry, Cavalry and gunners), or in the case of the Royal Engineers 3 years regular service out of a 12 year engagement). The Reserve was divided into two classes: 1st which included all those who were fit for further service abroad, if recalled to the colours, and the 2nd Class who were men considered only fit for service in the UK, if recalled. The first Class was further subdivided into four sections, A,B.C and D. Sections A,B and D are described in this article on the
Long, Long Trail website. I haven't been able to discover what the conditions were for a man to be allocated to section C. The answer is probably to be found in the Regulations for the Army Reserve 1893, but again I can't find an online copy of this document.
