late (13 months!) birth registration?
« on: Sunday 03 September 23 18:08 BST (UK) »
GRO ref Q2 1859 South Shields 10a 529
Which I suspect 'may' be an error in the copy register sent to the GRO, but I'll email the local registrar tomorrow and ask if they have time to check the original. If that says the same I'll have to remain puzzled :-)

FreeBMD/ GRO/ local registrar's online index doesn't show any other likely entry to make me think it was a re-registration and I have cornered the market in birth register entries for an Elizabeth or Isabella Smith born South Shields 1859 +/-2  and this is the only illegitimate one.

Unless, that is, someone else can find another one :-)

I think it could be a mistake with the DOB, and it is supposed to say born April 1859. Just a thought.

I have one of mine who died 1 June 1938 but the burial says 4th June 1939. I am sure it is a mistake with the year as her obituary in mid June 1938 said she has already been interred.

yes coombs, I agree.
Will report back if the local registrar has the time to look ( I ask, but am always aware they have other, more immediate duties to deal with).

I suppose if it is the same when you get it checked, perhaps Isabella Smith was in some sort of difficulty and wasn't able to report the birth? I believe it was illegal by that point, but I suppose it doesn't mean everyone got around to it when they should have done?

I did look in the newspapers if I could find an Isabella Smith who'd been fined for this, and so far I haven't but - but I do have some articles about an Isabella Smith who had a child and wasn't married, who seemed to be living a chaotic life. I can transcribe them here if it helps? I just don't know if it's the same one.
;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

If you can give me the dates and newspaper titles that have those reports I'd be interested to have a look at them.

This child is part of my (neverending,  frustrating) search for Elizabeth/Isabella/Elisebla Smith

I've no idea if it's the same person, but this is what I found.

'North & South Shields Gazette and Northumberland and Durham Advertiser'
18th August 1859
Page 6 of 7, first column under 'Local Police Intelligence'. It's the second paragraph down and begins "Isabella Smith, a young unmarried woman, with a child in her arms . . .'

Looking at it again, the other one I found was for Bishop Auckland which I assume is too far away to be your Isabella.

From memory, from copies of some certs I've had over the years, if it was a re-registration it would be signed 'on the authority of the registrar general' or words to that effect. If it was registered after 42 days after the birth I think it was similar wording or signed by two registrars.

I'd say it's more likely the wrong year of birth has been entered on the GRO return.

thanks for the input everyone.

jonw65 Thank you, the quote from the 1836 Act is interesting, something else on the long list of stuff I didn't know!

Stanwix Thanks for the newspapers entries. The one from Shields is now in the 'possible but not definite' folder and the Bishop Auckland one in the 'outside chance but unlikely' folder.

JayG Thank you, I too think its quite possibly an error with the birth year.

I've sent off an email to the local registrar this morning.
In my experience South Tyneside do try their best to answer queries and are very helpful. It will all depend on how busy they are with current duties, but Granda always said Shy bairns get nowt, so I've asked :-)
