King George III Rumour
« on: Tuesday 22 August 23 16:03 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am researching my late husband's family tree for my children and there has been a story passed down that they are related to King George III via his daughter Princess Elizabeth.  Apparently she had an illegitimate daughter called Eliza (b. 1814) who was fostered by a family called Turner.

I have gone back to Eliza Turner (b. 1814) who married John Craigdallie of Perth.  I found her in the 1851 census (she is now Eliza Mark - b. 1814 in Deptford, Kent) so she exists and everything matches that we have been told but obviously how do we find out if she was fostered or if she was in fact royal?

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.  My son has got his DNA on Ancestry if that helps do you think?

Thank you in advance,

Lisa Lade

I would take such stories with a huge pinch of salt, but there is still a possibility.

I found an Eliza Turner baptised 23 Feb 1816 in Deptford, daughter of John and Mary, of George Street, a gent. DOB is listed as 28 March 1812.

An Eliza Turner was baptised 21 November 1817 at St Nicholas Deptford, daughter of Henry and Susan of Stowage, a shoe maker.

What information does her 1844 marriage give for her father

Your family story of Princess Elizabeth does not seem to tie in with her biography:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Elizabeth_of_the_United_Kingdom

Princess Elizabeth was born in 1770 and so would have been 44 in 1814.
She may have had a daughter, Eliza, in 1788 who was adopted by a Henry Ramus.

Her 1839 marriage says she is of Slough, full age, and the daughter of John Turner but a dash through his occupation. It is likely she was the one baptised 1816 to John and Eliz in Deptford, John a gent.

A gent usually meant they lived on independent means.

Thank you Coombs - perhaps the closeness of Slough to Windsor has initiated this family tale  :)

Thank you everyone, I have always taken the tale with a pinch of salt but thought I would have a look at everything now that we have so much info online.  When my late husband's mum gave us the family tree all written down it was in the early 90s so we couldn't verify much at all.

Would really love to know where the story originated and why!!!

Thanks again,

Lisa
