On Saturday afternoon Alice, aged 13, daughter of Mr James Hewitt, a labourer, whilst trying to cross the footboard fell into the canal at the 27th lock between the land racks, and was drowned. The body, which had a coupe of marks, possibly caused by passing boats, was recovered at 11:30p.m. by Acting-sergt. Corcoran and some civilians It was shown by the evidence given before Coroner Conway that no one was to be blamed. The jury attached a paragraph to their verdict urging upon the Canal Company the necessity of making better provision for the public safety at this dangerous place where several accidents have occurred.
