1939 Register

Hello , doesn't the 1939 Register include place of birth like the rest of the census's do ? It would be so helpful , if not , why not ?

Because it is not a census, it was a register of the whole population with a view to assessing the populace while getting onto a war footing. Who was able bodied, who was doing what essential work. Who was able to be enlisted/sent to other parts of the country for essential work, numbers for rationing etc etc.

The 1939 National Register was originally conceived for the purposes of issuing Identity Cards.
It was then swiftly followed for the issuing of Ration Books.

After the War (1948?) it was used by the NHS, and updated by them until the 1990s.

Why would Place of Birth be important for any of these purposes?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

…. and what might happen to change things between now and then is anybody’s guess. So don’t get your hopes up!

The Scottish 1931 census WILL be released in due course.
Skewis (Wales and Scotland), Ayers (Maidenhead, Berkshire), Hildreth (Berkshire)
