WW2 Letter
« on: Thursday 20 July 23 22:54 BST (UK) »
I have found a letter written to my get uncle in 1940 from a friend who he trained with during 1939.
It is signed W K Baker 626613
No11 Group RAF.
I wish to know the full name of this solider in a hope to find any ancestors who might like a copy.
If anyone can advise me of what they believe to be his name that would help get me going in the right direction.
Many Thanks
Barton, Fletcher (Cheshire)
Goddard, Wright, Buckley, Hadfield, Wild (Derbyshire)
Hodson, Christian, O'Connoll (Lancashire, IOM)
Compstall, Chisworth, Glossop

WW2 service records are not online to link his service number to.  He appears to have survived the war as there is no entry for him with that service number on the cwgc website

Commendation for DFM

Quote
BAKER, William George. 626613 Flight Sergeant, No.61 Sqn.
L. G. 20/4/1943. Sorties 33, Flying hours 198. Pilot. Air2/8944.

This N.C.O. has completed 198 hours operational flying. Every sortie has been characterised by the most meticulous execution of pre-flight planning which has contributed greatly to the success of the attacks. On his first sortie as captain, he was attacked simultaneously by two night fighters when flying over the Kattegat. By extremely skilful evasive action, he ultimately evaded both fighters without giving them the opportunity of getting in a burst. For his exemplary skill in the execution of well prepared plans and for his courage and ability in the face of intense enemy opposition, he is most strongly recommended for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.
24th February, 1943.
