Interesting to note that on the Lancashire BMD site they have two marriages registered.  One as Ann Bancroft and the other as Ann Traynor.  They both have exactly the same reference number and marriage place is stated as being Manchester Cathedral.

Born a Traynor and married a Bancroft before marrying James.

The local register office obviously registered the marriage in both her surnames.

Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire
White: Bristol

They only have one marriage registered. LancsBMD index both names that's all.

In 1871 James BROOKS is a widower visiting in Ardwick with Elizabeth SHARPLES and her children.  Elizabeth's maiden name was BROOK(E)S.

Thankyou. So we know now Ann died between 1861 and 1871.

Baptism transcript at Cheetham 03 Jun 1851 gives parents as James Bancroft and Ann Tayno  ::)
Date of birth 22 Oct 1850

I assumed Alfred was a son of James Brooks and Ann or from a previous marriage of James. Joseph Bancroft's 1848 death certificate isnt available as a digital image from GRO tet so cant buy it.
