Political Correctness in census transcription
« on: Tuesday 11 July 23 09:43 BST (UK) »
I am used to inaccurate transcriptions in the census as we all are but this is more than just someone misreading an entry.

Looking at the 1921 census in London on FindMyPast I came across a transcription which gave the person's place of birth as "Portstewart, Londonderry (Derry), Ireland". I thought it odd to say the least that anyone would write "Londonderry (Derry)" in 1921 so I looked at the original and it clearly says "Co. Derry, Portstewart, Ireland" so I can only assume that someone decided that was not politically acceptable today.

As you found an error - did you report it to FindMyPast?  They are usually very good at putting right any mistakes in transcription.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Good luck with that.  I reported an error to Find My Past in 2019 and it is still not corrected.  There is a child on the original image who is not on the transcript.

I emailed Find My Past at the beginning of June and was informed that the details would be passed to the data team for investigation.

Four years ago when I first reported that error and still not corrected.  >:(  Will they ever do so???

I think probably everybody from that county in the 1921 census is indexed by findmypast as born Londonderry (Derry), Ireland
