The web based Wartime Memories Project
« on: Friday 07 July 23 09:27 BST (UK) »
Does anybody know if this project has stalled ?   I know of two people who have submitted a lot of material to them, both have had positive contacts with their volunteer researchers who confirmed progress and then completion at their stage one over 18 months ago another 12 months back. BUT the biographies/photos have never appeared on line and there is no response to any queries from the site itself, even when a site volunteer asked repeatedly on behalf of one friend.

They were about to send valuable ephemera but I have advised against it.

I am told that they are asking £25 membership now, is it become just a money making scheme ?

I get the impression that it is not active.  I noticed that it said:-

The Wartime Memories Project Website is archived for preservation by the British Library.

If I put in Wartime Memories Project into the search box on the British Library website nothing comes up relating to it.

It may be that this project has run out of money and can no longer afford to run it. Although the contact page comes up I have my doubts as to whether any response would be forthcoming.

Interesting to note that the dates, in Roman numerals, are 1999 to 2023.

They still have volunteers actively working vetting the incoming material and still seem to be taking money.

I double checked the website and see that no phone number or email address is provided.  Contact is solely by leaving a message in the relevant space.

There is no clue as to where they are based at all which seems unusual.  They could be in Timbuctoo for all anyone knows!

Their Facebook page seems to be more active, a recent post is dated 25 May.  I wonder if you may get somewhere if you write using the below email addy which is on their Facebook site?

Worth trying do you think?

I donated a WW2 RAF group photo some time ago, I didn't get a reply and the photo hasn't been added to the site  ::)
It would be a shame if it is no longer active.

I hope it does get updated regularly because I subscribed last week!
I did get a response from a lady called Angela so I am assuming that it's still going, the email address I received my response from was remember@wartimememoriesproject.com
I noticed that the email ad I received my response from is slightly different to the one from the FB site and she did say to email her if I had any issues accessing the site so maybe you will get a response from that email.
Hope this helps 😊

I donated several items about my great uncle -- never had an acknowledgement and the items and info have never appeared on their site.

Girl Guide's email address ends in co.uk. Shazbaz's ends in .com. No address, no phone number, no further contact? the British Library know nothing about it. I don't like the sound of this outfit one little bit.

That email address doesnt seem to be answered Girl Guide, thanks for providing it though :)

I begin to wonder if they are collecting membership fees, collecting photos and memorable pieces of ephemera, badges or medals and I hope they are not selling what they are gifted.

I agree with Susie, it starts to smell a bit off, it looks as if the project began with good intent but possibly turned into a money making scheme with their volunteers still working away to give the impression of an active site.  I am sure the volunteers dont realise that all of the gifted stories they are working on and forwarding to the owner have been going nowhere for a couple of years now. Its sad.
